25 things I wish I knew a little better at 20

March 21, 2026 by Caroline Potter

The opinion of anyone who is not Jesus should not exhaust you.

You don’t have to be an alcoholic to quit drinking.

Go to the same places consistently. Get to know people in those places.

You’re never going to beat the full of yourself allegations.

Sometimes it’s the wrong path that leads you to the right places. And the people that hurt your heart the most, lead you to those who heal it.

Sensitive people suffer more. But they also love more. And dream more.

When God is silent, let His track record keep you grounded. After all, He’s carried you this far, hasn't He?

Talk to strangers.

Intentional people don’t “see where it goes” they pick it up and take it where they want it to be.

God’s plan for you doesn’t involve LinkedIn at all.

Ending a friendship because they didn’t show up when you needed them the most is valid.

Grief can make you quiet.

It pays to be the girl who doesn’t split the bill. And if he does ask to split, there’s nothing wrong with paying the entire bill and seeing yourself out. Don’t let anyone try to convince you that it was rude of you. If he’s stingy with his money, he’ll be stingy with everything else.

Putting all your eggs in God’s basket is fine.

Most things will be okay eventually, but not everything will be. Acceptance is a small, quiet room. Get cozy.

Write letters. People can’t reread a phone call.

Sometimes you just need someone to listen who’s not in a hurry with you. And when someone offers you that kind of grace, give it back just as gently.

Operate from the table.

Love doesn’t check a box. And real love doesn’t fit into a box. It makes you realize that the boxes were created well before you ever knew what love was like.

Never touch anything with half your heart.

If you thank God for the very thing that is killing you, you will begin to faintly see it as a gift.

Something in you knows where you’re going. The price of knowing your worth comes with a big reward (if you actually listen).

The good stuff isn’t waiting, it’s just there at the same time.

People are rare in the universe so, be careful of what you leave out on the front porch.

You can keep wandering off all you want, but God’s just going to keep carrying you back.
